About Putney

Located in the London Borough of Wandsworth, Putney is one of 35 identified major centres in Central London, yet it remains a calm and peaceful suburb despite this proximity to the City.

Putney has the River Thames to the North and some of London's most beautiful green spaces to the South and West, making it an attractive location for buyers and tenants. Famously, Putney is and was home to several notable residents including: Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley, Thomas Cromwell, E. M. Forster, Sir Richard Branson, Nick Clegg and Taio Cruz.

There are plenty of things to do in Putney which will suit all ages and tastes. The busy high street and the Putney Exchange shopping centre are both fantastic places to shop, eat and unwind. With a wide variety of shops, boutiques, pubs and wine bars, restaurants and businesses, there is something for everyone. Food lovers will not be disappointed with the vast array of restaurants from Indian, Japanese, Thai, Italian and French cuisine. There is also a comprehensive selection of top supermarket chains to suit all needs. The nightlife in Putney is vibrant, with some of London's most well-known clubs located all on one street. The newly regenerated Ram Quarter, alongside luxury flats, showcases boutique shopping options surrounded by architecturally designed grounds and waterways. This compliments the shops on Putney high street and in the Southside Shopping Centre.

Putney has a long history with rowing with more than 20 different rowing clubs making use of the River Thames at Putney Embankment. The highly contested University Boat Race has had its starting point in Putney since 1845. The two crews are set off from a concrete bollard called the University Stone found on Putney Embankment. Notably, Putney is also home to the Head of the River Race which is held annually and attracts large crowds to the area.

If you are more interested in culture and the arts, the Half Moon in Putney is a great music venue and the Putney Arts Theatre is home to the Putney Theatre Company and youth theatre group. There is also an array of sports grounds and facilities, playing fields and golf courses are in abundance to keep the whole family entertained.

For something a bit more relaxing, Putney is home to the Fulham Palace Museum and London's Wetland Centre, a great place for wildlife enthusiasts and located just minutes away in Barnes.

State Primary and Junior Schools in Putney include Brandlehow School, Greenmead Primary School, St Mary's C of E School, and Granard Primary School.

State Secondary Schools in Putney include Putney High School, Our Lady of the Victories and Ark Putney Academy.

Private Schools in Putney include Lion House and Falcons School.

For those preferring to travel via road, Putney has easy links to the A3 which will take you to the South East and the rest of the UK via the M25. Being a busy town, Putney has a frequent bus service, with buses scheduled every 5-10 minutes during peak times. There are also several Uber and London mini cab options should you prefer not to drive yourself.
